Sugar Island is a small place in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger Village of Summit.

You can find Sugar Island on County Trunk Highway O. It's located west of Highway 67. The community is about 10 miles east of Watertown, Wisconsin. It is also about 5 miles east of County Trunk Highway R. The entire island is surrounded by the waters of Lower Lake Nemahbin.

The Story Behind Sugar Island's Name

The original name for this area was Sinsibakwado-Minissing. This comes from the Chippewa language. It means "at, to, or from Sugar Island." The Chippewa people, also known as the Ojibwe, are a Native American tribe. They gave the island this name for a special reason.

The island had many maple trees. These trees produce a sweet sap. Once a year, the Chippewa tribe would collect this sugary sap from the trees on the island. This sap was used to make maple syrup and sugar. That's how Sugar Island got its sweet name!
