Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park (which means "Parque Nacional Sumaco Napo-Galeras" in Spanish) is a very special protected area in Ecuador. It is a huge natural space where animals and plants are kept safe. The park is located across three provinces: Napo, Orellana, and Sucumbíos. The highest point in the park is the Sumaco volcano, which reaches 3,732 meters (about 12,244 feet) high. The lowest parts of the park are around 600 meters (about 1,968 feet) above sea level. This amazing park was created in 1994 to protect its incredible wildlife and beautiful landscapes.

Amazing Animals in the Park

Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park is home to many different kinds of animals. Scientists have found about 280 types of birds here, but they think there are many more because parts of the park are still unexplored!

Birds of Sumaco

Some of the interesting birds you might find include the Plain Antvireo, the Spot-winged Parrotlet, the Military Macaw, and the Coppery-chested Jacamar. These birds add beautiful colors and sounds to the park's forests.

Mammals Living in the Park

A study of mammals on the eastern side of the Sumaco volcano found 17 different species. This included eight types of bats. Larger mammals that live here are the powerful Jaguar, the unique Spectacled Bear, the giant Giant Anteater, the mountain-dwelling Mountain Tapir, and the stealthy Puma.

Reptiles and Amphibians

There is not much information yet about the reptiles and amphibians in the park. However, experts believe there are many different kinds of frogs, toads, and snakes. Some amphibians are found only in this area. For example, the Sumaco Stubfoot Toad is known only from the eastern slopes of the Sumaco volcano. Also, a type of rain frog called Pristimantis ernesti has only been found at the very top of Sumaco. This shows how special and unique the park's environment is!
