Exploring Sumidero's Past
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 984 people lived in Sumidero barrio at that time.

Understanding Special Communities
In 2001, a law was created to find and help communities in Puerto Rico that needed extra support. These are called "marginalized communities" or "Special Communities." In 2017, the Governor of Puerto Rico started a new government group to work with the Special Communities Program. Parcelas Santa Clara, which is in Sumidero, is one of the 742 places on the list of Comunidades Especiales de Puerto Rico.
