Summerfield is a small place in northwestern Castro County, Texas, United States. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is not an official city or town with its own local government.
Summerfield is located along U.S. Route 60. It is northwest of Dimmitt, which is the main town and "county seat" of Castro County. A county seat is like the capital city for a county. Summerfield is about 3,937 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level. Even though it's not a city, Summerfield has its own post office with the ZIP code 79085.
History of Summerfield
Summerfield started in the late 1890s. Its first name was Boom. In 1907, the name was changed to Summerfield. This was done because there was another place in Texas already called Boom. The new name honored John Summerfield, who was a surveyor. A surveyor is someone who measures land.
The community grew up along the Pecos & Northern Texas Railway. This railway helped connect Summerfield to other places. Summerfield is also located near Castro Creek. It is close to the borders of Deaf Smith and Parmer counties.
