The Sune series is a popular collection of books for kids and young teens. Swedish writers Anders Jacobsson and Sören Olsson have been publishing these books since 1984.
The stories first started as 90 episodes for Swedish Radio. They were broadcast between 1983 and 1993. The tales take place in a made-up town called Glimmerdagg in central Sweden. This town is located "somewhere between Karlskoga and Örebro". The main school in the stories is Söderskolan, which is for children aged 7-13. The books are written as if things are happening right now, using a third-person view.

Meet Sune Andersson
Sune Andersson is the main character, a Swedish schoolboy. He lives in a two-story house with his family. His dad, Rudolf, works in an office, and his mom, Karin, is a librarian. Sune also has a big sister named Anna and a little brother called Håkan "Bråkan". The name "Bråkan" means "the Menace".
In the third book, Självklart, Sune, Sune's little sister, Isabelle, is born. Sune's full name is Karl Sune Rudolf Andersson. Sune is very interested in girls. He even calls himself a "girl charmer" (Swedish: tjejtjusare). His childhood friend and girlfriend is Sophie Blixt. But Sune often likes other girls too, as long as they are nice.
How the Sune Stories Began
In 1983, Anders Jacobsson worked at a primary school in Karlskoga. He noticed that not much had changed since he was a child. Kids played similar games, and books were much the same. Jacobsson heard that a local radio station in Örebro was looking for a new radio show. It could be about anything, as long as it had a local connection.
Jacobsson wrote one episode about Sune. He recorded it in his own studio and sent it to the station. The episode was a big hit! The station asked him to create a whole Sune series. Jacobsson wrote more episodes, and soon listeners were calling to hear the rest of Sagan om Sune ("The Tale About Sune"). The stories about Sune were soon broadcast across all of Örebro County. Many people listened to Sune at work and at home.
Sune was a 7-year-old boy in first grade. His best friend was Joakim Fröberg. Sune was not a typical "tough guy" who liked to fight or play soccer. Instead, he was much more interested in girls.
A local publisher called Hegas contacted Jacobsson. They wanted to publish a book with the Sune stories. Sören Olsson drew the pictures for the first book, Sagan om Sune. It was published just before Christmas in 1984. The second book, Sune börjar tvåan ("Sune Starts Second Grade"), came out in 1985. Olsson also helped write this one. The third book, Självklart, Sune ("Of Course, Sune"), published in 1986, was written by both Jacobsson and Olsson.
Jacobsson and Olsson had planned to end the Sune series with Sune och Svarta Mannen ("Sune and the Dark Man") in 1989. They wanted to focus on the Bert series, which they had started two years earlier. But both series became so popular that they continued!
Sune on Screen and Radio
The Sune books have inspired several TV shows and movies. Two Swedish Television Christmas calendars are based on Sune:
- Sunes jul ("Sune's Christmas") in 1991
- Håkan Bråkan in 2003
In 1998, Familjen Anderssons sjuka jul ("The Andersson Family's Sick Christmas") was the Swedish Radio calendar.
There have also been movies:
- The film Sune's Summer, based on the book Sunes sommar, came out in 1993.
- The movie Håkan Bråkan & Josef was released in 2004.
Animated TV Series
An animated TV series called The World of Tosh features a 9-year-old Sune. In this cartoon, Sophie acts more like a tomboy. Sune doesn't seem to fall in love with her in the same way. They also have a friend named Herman, who is smart but quiet.
