Sunland Park Mall is a big shopping mall in El Paso, Texas. It is owned and run by a company called Washington Prime Group. You can find it on the west side of El Paso, right by Interstate 10 and Sunland Park Drive.

This mall has five main stores, called "anchor stores." It also has more than 130 smaller shops. These shops are spread out over two floors inside the mall. Sunland Park Mall is the second biggest mall in the El Paso area. Only Cielo Vista Mall is larger.

The mall is very large, with about 918,000 square feet (85,300 m2) of shopping space. Because of its size, it is known as a "super-regional mall." This means it's a major shopping spot for a wide area.

The building of Sunland Park Mall was finished in 1988. It first opened its doors to shoppers on August 31 of that year. The mall is about one mile away from Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino. This is a special place where you can watch horse races and play casino games. It's just across the state line in Sunland Park, New Mexico. The mall is also about four miles (6 km) from the border with Mexico.

Some stores have changed over the years. Macy's closed its store at Sunland Park Mall in 2017. A store called Western Wear then moved into that space. Forever 21 also closed its doors in 2018. On November 8, 2018, it was announced that Sears would close its location here in early 2019. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores.

Main Stores at Sunland Park Mall

The mall has several large stores that are its main attractions. These are often called "anchor stores" because they are big and draw many shoppers.

Current Anchor Stores

  • Dillard's Men: This store sells clothes and items for men.
  • Dillard's Women: This store sells clothes and items for women.
  • Starr Western Wear: This store sells western-style clothing and goods.

Past Anchor Stores

Over the years, some of the main stores at the mall have changed.

  • Foley's: This store later became Macy's in 2006.
  • Forever 21: This clothing store closed in 2018.
  • JCPenney: This department store closed in 2002. Foley's took its place.
  • Macy's: This department store closed in 2017. Starr Western Wear moved into its spot.
  • Mervyn's: This store closed in 2008. Forever 21 then opened there.
  • Montgomery Ward: This store closed in 2001. Dillard's Men took its place.
  • Sears: This well-known department store closed in 2019.
  • The Popular Dry Goods: This store closed in 1995. Sears then moved into that space.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ

For a while, a special musical instrument was kept at Sunland Park Mall. It was a Mighty Wurlitzer theater organ. This huge organ was originally from El Paso's Plaza Theatre. The Plaza Theatre was closed for repairs, so the organ was moved to the mall.

The organ had been sent to a collector in Dallas, Texas, but it was brought back to El Paso. It was set up at the mall so people could still enjoy it. When the Plaza Theatre reopened in 2006, the organ was moved back to its original home there.
