Sunriver is a special community in Deschutes County, Oregon, USA. It's a big place, about 3,300 acres, designed for homes and vacations. It's located on the east side of the Deschutes River. Sunriver is about 15 miles south of Bend, near the Cascade Range.
Sunriver has many homes, shared areas, and fun places to visit. It also includes the Sunriver Resort and a shopping area called The Village at Sunriver.

Discover Sunriver: A Fun Community
The Sunriver Resort Lodge has hotel rooms and places for events. It also has a nice restaurant and other cool features. Sunriver Resort manages four golf courses. Two of these, Meadows and Woodlands, are open to everyone. The other two, Caldera and Crosswater, are private for resort guests.
Activities and Recreation in Sunriver
Sunriver is also home to the SHARC. This stands for the Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center. It was finished in 2012 and offers many water activities. There are also 34 miles of special paths for biking. Plus, you can find 20 outdoor tennis courts for playing.

Sunriver's Past: A Look at Its History
Sunriver is built on the land of a former World War II training camp. This camp was called Camp Abbot. It was used to train soldiers called combat engineers. The camp opened in 1942. However, by June 1944, the camp was closed. Most of its buildings were taken down.
From Army Camp to Resort: The Great Hall
One important building was saved. This was the Officers' Club. It has been kept and updated. Today, it is known as the "Great Hall." The Sunriver Resort manages this historic building.
How Sunriver Got Its Name
The name "Sunriver" was chosen by the people who developed the area. Their names were John Gray and Donald V. McCallum. The first apartments were built in 1968. This was when the Sunriver Lodge was also finished. In 1969, the full plan for the community was ready. Developers then started selling land lots.
Sunriver was also once the location of the Shonquest Ranch, a pioneer farm. The Sunriver post office opened on July 18, 1969. This happened when the public parts of the resort also opened.
Famous Visitors to Sunriver
In 1974, two famous actors stayed in Sunriver. They were John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn. They were filming a movie called Rooster Cogburn. Oregon's Governor at the time, Tom McCall, even flew in to visit them.

Sunriver has warm and dry summers. The average monthly temperatures are not too hot. According to climate experts, Sunriver has a "warm-summer Mediterranean climate." This means it has mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers.
