Sunriver's Past: A Look at Its History

Sunriver is built on the land of a former World War II training camp. This camp was called Camp Abbot. It was used to train soldiers called combat engineers. The camp opened in 1942. However, by June 1944, the camp was closed. Most of its buildings were taken down.

From Army Camp to Resort: The Great Hall

One important building was saved. This was the Officers' Club. It has been kept and updated. Today, it is known as the "Great Hall." The Sunriver Resort manages this historic building.

How Sunriver Got Its Name

The name "Sunriver" was chosen by the people who developed the area. Their names were John Gray and Donald V. McCallum. The first apartments were built in 1968. This was when the Sunriver Lodge was also finished. In 1969, the full plan for the community was ready. Developers then started selling land lots.

Sunriver was also once the location of the Shonquest Ranch, a pioneer farm. The Sunriver post office opened on July 18, 1969. This happened when the public parts of the resort also opened.
