A Look at Sunset's History

Sunset, like many towns in southern Louisiana, started because of the railroad. It was a place where goods like cotton and sweet potatoes were sent out. Special items were also brought into the town by train.

The town officially became a town in 1904. Its first town meeting was held on December 7 of that year. Victor Hugo Sibille was the first mayor.

In the late 1800s, farmers in the area started growing more sweet potatoes instead of cotton. This was because a tiny bug called the cotton boll weevil was destroying cotton crops. Because of this, Sunset became known as the "Sweet Potato Capital of the Nation."

There's a local story that says The Bank of Sunset was one of the few banks that stayed open during the Great Depression in 1929. This was a very difficult time when many banks closed across the country.
