Sunset Regional Park is one of the biggest parks in Las Vegas. You can find it near the McCarran International Airport in the southeast part of the city. The park has Sunset Road to its north, Eastern Avenue to its west, and Warm Springs Road to its south. It is also close to the Tomiyasu neighborhood.

Park History: How Sunset Park Began

The land for Sunset Regional Park was first gathered in 1909. Back then, it was known as the Miller Ranch. Later, it became the Vegas Stock Farm. This farm was a place where thoroughbred racehorses were trained and raced. In 1967, Clark County bought the property. They then turned it into the public park we know today.

Sunset Park Pond: A Home for Wildlife

The Sunset Park Pond is a cool spot within the park. It covers about 1.4 acres and is usually 10 to 12 feet deep. This pond is home to many different kinds of water birds and fish.

You might notice a giant stone Moai at the pond. This statue looks like the famous ones found on Easter Island in Chile. It was first carved for the Aku Aku Restaurant in Las Vegas. The Moai stood at the restaurant's entrance at the Stardust Hotel. After the restaurant closed, the Moai was moved to Sunset Park Pond. This move was led by Paulina Jimeno de Bosch.

Fun Activities at Sunset Park

Fishing Fun: What Fish Can You Catch?

You can go fishing in the pond all year long! The State of Nevada Department of Fish and Wildlife helps keep the pond stocked. From November to March, they add rainbow trout every week. From April to October, they add channel catfish once a month. You might also catch other fish like bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie, and largemouth bass.

Sporting Fields: Play Your Favorite Game

Sunset Park has lots of places to play sports. There are several fields for softball and little-league baseball. You can also find courts for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. On the western side of the park, there's a large 27-hole disc-golf course. It's a great place to throw a disc and enjoy the outdoors.

Picnic Spots and Walking Paths

The park offers 31 different picnic areas. These spots can hold groups from 50 up to 1,000 people, perfect for parties or family gatherings. If you like to walk, there are four walking trails. They add up to 3.5 miles of pathways for you to explore.

Exciting Events and Entertainment

Las Vegas Renaissance Fair: Step Back in Time

Every fall, Clark County's Parks and Recreation department hosts a special event. It's called the Age of Chivalry Renaissance Festival. This festival takes place right here in Sunset Park. You can experience what life might have been like in medieval times, with knights, jesters, and crafts.
