Sunyani is a city in Ghana. It is the capital of the Sunyani Municipal District and the Bono Region. In 2021, Sunyani had a population of over 1.2 million people. Most people in the city are from the Bono and Akan tribes.

What is the History of Sunyani?
Sunyani is located in the forested uplands of mid-southwestern Ghana. The city started as a camp for elephant hunters in the 1800s. Its name comes from the Akan word 'Osondmg o', which means elephant.
In 1924, the British government made Sunyani a district headquarters. A new road connected Sunyani to the city of Kumasi. This made Sunyani an important place for trading goods like cocoa, kola nuts, maize, and yams.
Today, Sunyani is the main government center for the Bono Region. It also has a high court. Sunyani is growing fast and has become one of the cleanest cities in Ghana.
How Does Sunyani's Economy Work?
The economy of Sunyani mostly depends on farming. About 48% of the people work in agriculture. Around 24% work in the service sector. The rest work in trade (15%) and industry (13%).
Many people, especially women, work in trade at the Wednesday Market. Sunyani's growth is helped by its good water supply. The Volta River Authority (VRA) provides electricity to the city. Water comes from rain, streams, rivers, and springs. However, during the dry season, called harmattan, water can be harder to find.
What Industries are in Sunyani?
Sunyani is home to African Global Pharma Limited (AGP). This is the only company in Sunyani and northern Ghana that makes medicines. AGP is connected to a Canadian company and produces common medicines.
The city's economy also gets a boost from Newmont's Gold. This is a large mining company located nearby in Kenyase.

Tourism in Sunyani focuses on the beautiful natural areas around the city. There are several hotels, hostels, guest houses, and restaurants.
One famous building is the Cocoa House. It's a tall building that stands out in the city's skyline. It holds offices for many companies and shops. Other interesting buildings include Christ the King Cathedral and Queen of Peace Building.
Outside the city, you can visit the amazing Kintampo waterfalls. You can also see the Boabeng monkey sanctuary in Fiema, which is home to many monkeys.

How Do People Travel in Sunyani?
Sunyani has its own airport, the Sunyani Airport. It opened on July 13, 1974. This airport is mainly for flights within Ghana. It connects passengers to Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Kumasi Airport, and Takoradi Airport.
For public transport, people use road transport. This includes buses like MetroMass and VIP, as well as taxis and Tro tro (shared minibuses).
You can travel from Sunyani to many major cities in Ghana. These include Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Tamale.
What About Education in Sunyani?
Sunyani is home to several important colleges and universities. These include the Sunyani Technical University and the University of Energy and Natural Resources. There is also the Catholic University College of Ghana and the College of Science, Arts and Education.
Other universities, like the University of Cape Coast and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, offer part-time and distance learning programs in Sunyani.
Sunyani also has many Senior High Schools. St. James Seminary Senior High School is one of the top five Senior High Schools in Ghana. Other well-known schools include Sunyani Business Senior High School and Sunyani Senior High School (Susec). These schools attract students from all over the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions.
There are also many primary, secondary, and technical schools in Sunyani and its surrounding areas. Some examples are Holy Spirit School, St. Mary's, and Twene Amanfo Secondary Technical School (TASTECH).

Sunyani has a special partnership with the city of Tuscaloosa in Alabama, USA. This "sister city" relationship started in 2011.
