A Look Back: Supmicrotech's History
Supmicrotech started a long time ago, in 1902. It was first called the Laboratoire de Chronométrie. This was a lab focused on measuring time very precisely, like with clocks and watches. In 1961, its name changed to the École nationale supérieure de chronométrie et micromécanique. This new name showed its focus on tiny machines and how they work. Today, Supmicrotech is still very interested in designing and making small mechanical devices and robots. This is because the area where the school is located has a history of making clocks and watches.
Where is Supmicrotech?
Supmicrotech is in the city of Besançon, which is in the eastern part of France. If you were to drive there, it's about 4 hours from Paris. It's also about two and a half hours from Strasbourg and Lyon.
What Can You Study at Supmicrotech?
Learning to Be an Engineer in France
Every year, about 250 students become engineers at Supmicrotech. They can choose to specialize in one of six main areas:
- Materials science: Learning about different materials and how they behave.
- Mechatronics: Combining mechanics, electronics, and computer science to create smart machines.
- Mechanical engineering: Designing and building machines and systems.
- Micromechanics: Working with very tiny mechanical parts and devices.
- Optoelectronics and Microelectromechanical systems: Studying how light and electricity work together in tiny systems.
- Industrial engineering: Making systems and processes work better and more efficiently.
Students can choose to spend their final year at Supmicrotech or at another school within the Polyméca network.
Studying Abroad: International Opportunities
Supmicrotech has partnerships with many universities around the world. This means students can sometimes go to these universities to study for a while. Some of these partner universities are in:
- Austria: Technische Universität, Vienna
- Algeria: Institut National d’Informatique, Algiers
- Brazil: Federal University of Uberlândia, Universidade Polytechnique, São Paulo
- Canada: École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de technologie supérieure, Montréal, Université Laval, Québec
