Susan Francia (born November 8, 1982) is an amazing rower from Hungary and America. She has won two Olympic gold medals! She grew up in Abington, Pennsylvania. Her mom is Katalin Karikó, a famous scientist who won a Nobel Prize! Susan went to the University of Pennsylvania and later lived in Princeton, New Jersey.
Becoming a Rower
Susan Francia started rowing when she was in her second year at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. She quickly became very good at it. In 2004, she was named an All-American for college rowing.
She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. She studied about law and society. Later, in 2018, she also earned another degree from UCLA.
Olympic and World Champion
After college, Susan joined the U.S. Rowing Senior National Team. She was a member for ten years! She won gold medals in the women's eight boat at two Olympic Games:
- The 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
- The 2012 Olympics in London, England.
Susan also won many gold medals at the World Rowing Championships. These are big competitions for rowers from all over the world. In 2006, her team set a new world record time!
She also won the Remenham Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2006 and 2011. This is a very famous rowing event in England.
Other Wins
Susan won the championship eight race at the Head of the Charles Regatta several times. This race happens in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She also won many races at the US Rowing National Championships. She was a top finisher in different types of rowing boats, like the "pair" and the "four."
Coaching
After her rowing career, Susan became a coach. She was an assistant coach for the UCSD women's rowing team. She also coached junior women's rowing at the San Diego Rowing Club. She helped young rowers get better at the sport.
Personal Life
Susan Francia is married to Ryan Amos. In February 2021, they welcomed their son into the world.
