Zsuzsanna "Susan" Francia is an amazing athlete from Hungary and America. She was born on November 8, 1982. Susan is famous for being a two-time Olympic gold medalist in rowing. She grew up in Abington, Pennsylvania, and is the daughter of Katalin Karikó, a Nobel laureate and important biochemist. Susan lives in Princeton, New Jersey, and works with the US Rowing Training Center.

Early Life and School
Susan Francia's mom is Katalin Karikó, a Nobel Prize winner. Her mom is a Hungarian biochemist who helped create mRNA research. Susan can speak Hungarian very well.
Susan started rowing when she was in her second year at the University of Pennsylvania in 2001. She was a top college rower there in 2004. She earned two degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004. One was in sociology of law and deviance, and the other was in criminology. Later, in 2018, she also earned a master's degree in business from UCLA.
Rowing Career Highlights
After finishing college, Susan Francia joined the U.S. Rowing Senior National Team. She was a member for ten years. During this time, she won two gold medals at the Olympic Games.
Her first Olympic gold was in the women's eight event at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. She won her second gold medal in the same event at the 2012 Olympics in London, England.
Susan also achieved great success at the World Rowing Championships. She won gold medals in the women's eight in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011. In 2006, her team set a new world record time of 5:55.50. She also won a gold medal in the coxless pair event in 2009.
Other Important Wins
Susan won the Remenham Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in both 2006 and 2011. She also won the championship eight event at the Head of the Charles Regatta multiple times. These wins happened in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2012. She also had many other wins and high finishes in national rowing competitions.
Coaching Experience
After her competitive rowing career, Susan shared her knowledge by coaching. She was an assistant coach for the UCSD women's rowing team. She coached them during the 2017–18 and 2018–19 seasons. Before that, she was the head coach for the junior women's varsity rowing team at the San Diego Rowing Club.
Personal Life
Susan Francia is married to Ryan Amos. In February 2021, they welcomed their son, who was born in the United States.
