Admiral Sushil Kumar Isaac was a very important leader in the Indian Navy. He held the highest position as the Chief of Naval Staff of the Indian Navy. He was from Neyyoor, a town in India. He decided not to use his last name, Isaac, because it caused confusion with his brother, who was also a naval officer. Admiral Kumar passed away on November 27, 2019.
Admiral Kumar was an expert in hydrography, which is the science of mapping oceans and seas. He was also skilled in amphibious warfare, which means planning military operations that involve both land and sea forces. He was also a trained instructor for air warfare.
He studied at the National Defence College and taught at the Defence Services Staff College. He also trained abroad, including with the Royal Navy in 1963 and the US Navy in 1976.
Admiral Kumar took part in several important events for India. He was involved in the invasion of Goa in 1961. He also served in the wars between India and Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. He received the Nao Sena Medal for his bravery while commanding a ship called INS Ghorpad.
He was promoted to commander in 1977 and to captain in 1983. As the Director of Naval Operations, he was awarded the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal. This award was for his excellent leadership during Operation Pawan and Operation Cactus, which helped free the Maldives.
Becoming a Flag Officer
On July 6, 1990, Sushil Kumar was promoted to rear admiral. This is a very high rank in the navy.
He held many important roles, including the Vice Chief of Naval Staff. He also commanded the naval forces in Mumbai and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Before becoming the Chief of Naval Staff, he was the commander of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command in Kochi.
Sushil Kumar became the 16th Chief of Naval Staff on December 30, 1998. He was the most decorated officer in the Indian Navy when he retired on December 29, 2001. Outside of his naval duties, he loved sailing yachts and played polo internationally.
His Passing
Admiral Sushil Kumar passed away on November 27, 2019, in New Delhi. He was 79 years old. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, shared his sadness about Admiral Kumar's death.
