History of Sutter's Name and Growth
Sutter has had a few different names over the years. It started as a settlement called South Butte. This community was near a stagecoach stop called Butte House.
Early Days as South Butte
The first post office for South Butte opened on August 7, 1871. It closed for a short time but reopened in 1879. Close by, there was a cemetery, which is now known as the Sutter Cemetery. There was also a schoolhouse next to the cemetery. Sometimes, school would let out early if there was a funeral.
Becoming Sutter City
Later, the town was renamed Sutter City on January 20, 1888. This happened during a time when many new towns were being planned in California. People hoped Sutter City would become a big new center.
The town was planned along where a railroad was supposed to go. People also hoped it would become the main city, or "county seat," for Sutter County because it was in the middle of the county. However, the railroad was never built, and Sutter City did not become the county seat.
The Name Changes to Sutter
Finally, the post office name changed one last time to Sutter on January 26, 1895. This is the name the community still uses today.
