Exploring Sutton's Past: A Brief History
After the American Revolution, many people called United Empire Loyalists moved to Sutton around 1799. One of the first settlers was Richard Shepherd from New Hampshire. As more people came, new buildings were constructed in the area.
A school opened in 1808, helping to educate the growing community. A town hall was built in 1859, showing the town's development. Later, churches for different faiths and a railway station were also added.
Sutton officially became a municipality in 1892. It was then recognized as a town in 1962. In 2002, the town grew much larger when it joined with the surrounding area. This merger almost doubled its population and greatly expanded its size.
Long ago, most people in Sutton were farmers. But after the Sutton Ski Resort opened in 1960, tourism became very important. Today, Sutton is a great place to visit all year. People enjoy road and mountain biking, hiking, and exploring local shops and attractions.
What's in a Name? The Origin of Sutton
The name "Sutton" comes from old English words. "Sudh" or "suth" means "south." "Tun" means "town" or "settlement." So, Sutton can be understood as "the southern town." This name makes a lot of sense because the town is located at the very southern part of Quebec. English settlers gave it this name.
Sutton's Location and Natural Beauty
Sutton is located close to the border between Canada and the United States, near Vermont. It's about 110 kilometers (68 miles) southeast of Montreal. It is also about 90 kilometers (56 miles) west of Sherbrooke.
Mount Sutton is a famous mountain in the area. It is home to a popular ski resort with 60 ski trails and 9 ski lifts. Many skiers from Quebec and nearby US states love to visit this resort. The highest point of the mountain is 960 meters (3,150 feet) tall.
To the west of Sutton is the Green Mountains Nature Reserve. You can explore this beautiful area on foot using trails. Different groups manage these trails, and some may require a small fee or membership to use.
