Svyatoslav Belza was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, on April 26, 1942. His father, Igor Fyodorovich Belza, was a musician and composer. His mother was Zoya Konstantinovna Belza-Doroshchuk.
His Early Life and Studies
In 1965, Svyatoslav finished his studies at Moscow State University. He studied languages and literature there. After university, he joined a famous research center called the Gorky Institute of World Literature.
A Career in Literature
Belza started writing for Literaturnaya Gazeta, a well-known newspaper, in 1979. He often wrote about books from other countries. He wrote more than 300 articles, mostly about Western literature and how Russian writers connected with European culture.
He was also an expert on William Shakespeare in Russia. He wrote introductions for over 100 books by famous authors like Oscar Wilde, Alexandre Dumas, and Jules Verne.
Becoming a TV Star
In 1987, Belza first appeared on Soviet television as a reviewer. Just one year later, he got his own show called Music on Air. This show helped many people learn about and enjoy classical music.
From 1993 to 1995, he was in charge of music and entertainment at a big TV company called Ostankino. Later, in 1997, he began working for Kultura TV. There, he hosted popular shows like Masterpieces of the World Theatre and In Your House. He also helped host other shows about opera and ballet.
Svyatoslav Belza passed away on June 3, 2014, in Munich, Germany. He was 72 years old.
Awards and Honors
Svyatoslav Belza received many awards during his life. In 1988, he got an award for his contributions to Polish culture. In 1994, he was given the important title of People's Artist of Russia.
He also received awards from Poland and Ukraine in 1997. In 2000, he was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship. Later, he received the State Prize of the Russian Federation for arts and literature in 2011. In 2012, he was given the Order of Merit for the Fatherland.
Belza was also a member of several important groups, including the Russian Television Academy and the Russian Academy of Arts.
His Family Life
Svyatoslav Belza married Nina Kulagina in 1969. She was a student and a champion swimmer. They had one son, Igor Belza, who was born in 1971. Igor is now a businessman.
After they divorced in 1981, Belza's partner was Olga Glebova. She was also an English teacher and the daughter of actor Pyotr Glebov. They had a son named Fyodor Belza, born in 1981. Fyodor has a son named Sergey, who is Svyatoslav Belza's grandson.
