Who Built Swanwyck?
Swanwyck was designed and built by a man named Peter Bauduy. He built it for his daughter, Cora, sometime between 1813 and 1819. Peter Bauduy was from France. He came to Wilmington after leaving his home country. He was also known for designing the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Wilmington.
The name "Swanwyck" comes from an old Dutch settlement. This settlement was once located nearby on the Delaware River, a bit upriver from New Castle.
How Swanwyck Changed Over Time
In the 1940s and 1950s, the farmland around Swanwyck started to change. It became a neighborhood called Swanwyck Estates. During this time, a new part was added to the house. This addition included a new front door. The original front of the house now faces sideways to the street.
What Does Swanwyck Look Like?
Swanwyck is a two-story brick building. It has a white stucco outside and simple, classic details. This style is known as British Regency. The main part of the house is three sections wide. It has a hipped roof, which slopes down on all sides.
The original front of the house used to have a central entrance with a porch. This porch has since been removed. A separate entrance was added on the second floor, reached by outside stairs. A notable decoration on the house is a wide band that goes all the way around the building.
Inside, the house originally had three big rooms on each floor. There was a central hallway and a staircase. However, the inside has been changed quite a lot over the years.
