The Story of Sweet Home

How Sweet Home Got Its Name

The story of Sweet Home began in June 1853. A man named Solomon West bought a large piece of land. It was about 2,214 acres (8.96 km²) along Mustang Creek in Lavaca County. A year later, his family traveled a long way to Texas. When they finally arrived, Solomon's daughter Mary was very tired. She looked around and said, "Pa, this would be a sweet home!" And that's how the community got its name.

Early Days and Growth

In 1860, a man named George West set up some important businesses. He opened a store, a hotel, and stables in the area. During the Civil War, Sweet Home was a busy place. It served as a winter camp for wagons carrying supplies. These wagons moved cotton and other goods from Alleyton to Brownsville. Brownsville was one of the only ports the Confederate states could still use during the war.

In the 1870s, new families started moving to Sweet Home. Many of these new residents were from Czech and German backgrounds.

The Railroad and Changes

A big change happened in 1887. The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad built train tracks nearby. The tracks went from Hallettsville to Yoakum. They passed about five miles south of Sweet Home. Because of the new railroad, most people and businesses moved. They wanted to be closer to the train line. However, a few Czech families chose to stay at the original spot.

By 1890, Sweet Home had six stores. This shows it was still a growing place.

Schools in Sweet Home

The first public school in Sweet Home opened in 1891. It was located in the local Masonic Lodge hall. Later, in 1919, a new two-story schoolhouse was built. It stood at the corner of Hallettsville and West streets. This school was replaced again in the 1930s with an even newer building.

Later Years and Challenges

The railroad agency that helped Sweet Home grow closed in 1937. By 1948, the population was about 350 people. At that time, the community also had twelve stores and a recreational hall.

On September 20, 1967, a powerful tornado hit Sweet Home. This tornado was caused by Hurricane Beulah. It destroyed the post office and damaged many homes and businesses. The Queen of Peace church was also damaged.

By the mid-1980s, about 360 people lived in Sweet Home. This number stayed about the same through the year 2000. Today, Sweet Home has two churches, a volunteer fire department, and several businesses. It also has a new school.
