Sweetland is a place in Nevada County, California, that used to be a small town. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Marysville. This spot is high up, about 1,857 feet (566 meters) above sea level.
History of Sweetland
The area was named after the Sweetland brothers. One of them, Henry Pettit Sweetland, was a politician in California. He and his brothers settled here in 1850. By 1852, they were running a trading post. A trading post was like a general store where people could buy and sell goods.
Mining in Sweetland
In 1850, the Sweetland Mining District was created. This was an area where people looked for valuable minerals, especially gold. Three years later, this large district was divided into three smaller ones. One of these was North San Juan.
Sweetland was known for having very large sluices. Sluices were long, narrow channels used to separate gold from dirt and gravel using water.
Some of the bigger mines in the area included:
- Manzanita
- Sweetland Creek Mine
- Boss Mine
Life in Sweetland
A post office opened in Sweetland around 1857 or 1858. This meant people could send and receive mail. However, the post office closed in 1905. During its busiest mining days, Sweetland had about 200 to 300 people living there.
