History of North San Juan
North San Juan began during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush. This was a period from 1848 to 1855 when many people rushed to California to find gold. The community grew and became important because of a mining method called hydraulic mining. This type of mining used powerful jets of water to wash away hillsides and find gold. It was used nearby at Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park from 1850 to 1884.
An interesting fact about North San Juan is its connection to early communication. Starting in 1867, it was part of the first long-distance telephone line. This line connected French Corral to French Lake.
The original name, San Juan, was given by a soldier who settled here in 1853. He had fought in the Mexican–American War and thought the place looked like San Juan de Ulúa in Mexico. When the post office opened in 1857, "North" was added to the name. This was to make sure people didn't confuse it with San Juan in San Benito County.
