He is the founder and CEO of this company. At Larian Studios, he has led the creation of popular games. These include the Divinity series and the very successful Baldur's Gate 3.

Early Life and Education

Swen Vincke was born in Bruges, Belgium, on May 30, 1972. He grew up in a town called De Panne. His parents owned a restaurant there. From a young age, Swen loved arcade and computer games. He also enjoyed programming. He was very interested in Dungeons & Dragons and role-playing video games. Games like the Ultima series inspired him a lot. These games later influenced his own creations.

While still in school, Swen made his first game. It was a hunting simulator for his father. He later studied Computer Science at Ghent University. At first, he thought about working with speech recognition. But he saw how much fun people had with his game projects. This made him decide to focus on making video games instead.

Career in Video Games

Swen Vincke started Larian Studios in 1996. As the CEO and creative director, he is very important to the company. He guides the development of all their games.

Early Games and the Divinity Series

Swen was the project leader and lead programmer for Larian's first game. It was called The L.E.D. Wars and came out in 1997. After that, he worked on the first two games in the Divinity series. These were Divine Divinity (2002) and Beyond Divinity (2004). Both games won awards.

Educational Games

Swen also helped design KetnetKick (2004). This was an educational video game for children in Flemish. Other children's TV channels used this game too. For example, the British channel CBBC called their version Adventure Rock. Later, Swen led the creation of more educational games. These were Monkey Labs (2009) and Monkey Tales (2011).

Becoming a Self-Publishing Studio

Swen Vincke was the director and game designer for Divinity II. This game first came out in 2009. The final version was released in 2012. Around this time, he decided that Larian would publish its own games. This meant they would handle everything themselves. He then oversaw the making of Divinity: Dragon Commander, which was released in 2013.

Success with Original Sin and Baldur's Gate 3

While working on other projects, Swen also developed Divinity: Original Sin. This was the fourth main game in the Divinity series. It was released in 2014. The game was a big success with both players and critics. He then directed its sequel, Divinity: Original Sin II, released in 2017. Many people called it one of the best role-playing games ever made.

After these successes, Swen Vincke led the creation of Baldur's Gate 3. He was the creative director for this huge project. The game was released in August 2023. It received amazing reviews and won over 200 Game of the Year awards.
