Swiss wing is a tasty dish of sweet chicken wings. It's popular in Hong Kong restaurants. The wings are cooked in a special sauce. This sauce is made with soy sauce, sugar, Chinese wine, and different spices. Even though it's called "Swiss wing," it has nothing to do with Switzerland. People think it first came from either Hong Kong or Guangzhou, China.
Why is it Called Swiss Wing?
No one knows for sure how "Swiss wing" got its name. There's a fun story about it, but it's probably just a story.
The story says a visitor from a Western country was in a restaurant. They saw a dish called "sweetened soya sauce chicken wings." They asked a waiter what it was. The waiter's English wasn't perfect. He tried to say "sweet wing." But the customer heard "Swiss wing" instead. And so, the name stuck!
Where Did Swiss Wing Come From?
Many people believe that the Swiss wing dish was first made by a famous local restaurant. This restaurant is called Tai Ping Koon. In Hong Kong, it's common for restaurants to name new dishes after places. These places might not have any real connection to the food itself.
Swiss wing has even been shown on TV! It was featured in a cooking show called So Good by TVB.
