Swords of Steel is an exciting historical novel written by Elsie Singmaster. John Deane's Early Life

The story begins in 1859. John Deane is a 12-year-old boy living with his family in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. This town later became famous for a major Civil War battle. John has a close friend named Nicholas, who is a Black servant. They spend time together, even training a young horse.

A Friend in Danger

One day, something terrible happens. Nicholas is suddenly taken by people called slave catchers. These were people who illegally captured Black individuals, sometimes even free ones, to sell them into slavery in the Southern states. John is very upset when Nicholas is taken away to the South.

The Underground Railroad and John Brown

John soon learns a big secret about his own family. His father is a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. This was not a real railroad with trains. Instead, it was a secret network of safe houses and routes. Brave people helped enslaved African Americans escape to freedom in the North or Canada. John also visits Harper's Ferry, a town in West Virginia. There, he sees John Brown's raid. John Brown was an abolitionist, meaning he was against slavery. He tried to start a rebellion of enslaved people by taking over a government weapons storehouse.

The War Comes Home

As the American Civil War begins, the fighting eventually reaches Pennsylvania. John's own home is taken over by soldiers from the Confederate Army. These were the soldiers from the Southern states that had separated from the United States. John is locked in his family's cellar. But then, a surprising thing happens. The cook for the Confederate soldiers turns out to be his old friend, Nicholas! Nicholas helps John.

Joining the Fight

Later in the story, John decides to join the Union Army. These were the soldiers fighting for the Northern states, who wanted to keep the country united and end slavery. John experiences the final parts of the war. He sees how the conflict changes lives and shapes the future of the country.
