Sybil Christopher (born Sybil Williams; March 27, 1929 – March 7, 2013) was a talented Welsh actress and theatre director. She also owned a famous nightclub in New York City called "Arthur." Many people knew her as the first wife of the famous actor Richard Burton.
About Sybil Christopher
Sybil Williams was born on March 27, 1929, in a place called Tylorstown in Wales. She studied acting at the London Academy of Dramatic Arts. While working on a movie called The Last Days of Dolwyn in 1949, she met Richard Burton.
After they got married, Sybil mostly stopped acting in movies. She sometimes performed on stage in plays. Her marriage to Richard Burton ended in 1963. They divorced, and Sybil received custody of their children.
Sybil's Nightclub: Arthur
In 1965, Sybil Christopher opened a nightclub in New York City. She named it "Arthur". Many famous people helped her create the club, including Julie Andrews, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim.
"Arthur" quickly became a very popular place for celebrities to visit between 1965 and 1969. Stars like Truman Capote, Princess Margaret, and Andy Warhol were often seen there. A DJ named Terry Noel even said he invented "mixing" music at this club, which means playing songs from two different turntables at the same time.
Return to Theatre
After her nightclub, Sybil went back to working in theatre. She started the New Theatre in New York City. Later, in 1991, she also helped create the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor.
Sybil's Family
Sybil Christopher had two daughters with Richard Burton: Katherine "Kate" Burton, born in 1957, and Jessica Burton, born in 1959.
In 1965, Sybil married Jordan Christopher, who was a singer and actor. They raised his daughter together and also had another child, Amy Christopher, born in 1967.
