The Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 is a famous piece of music by Ludwig van Beethoven. It is the fifth of his nine symphonies. He wrote it between 1804 and 1808. This symphony is one of the most popular and well-known works in all of classical music.

A symphony is a long piece of music for an orchestra. This symphony has four main parts, called movements. The first movement is fast and powerful. The second is slower and more gentle. The third is a quick, playful part. This leads right into the fourth and final movement, which is grand and exciting.

The symphony was first played in Vienna in 1808. Beethoven's Sixth Symphony was also played for the first time at the same concert. The Fifth Symphony quickly became known as a very important piece of music.

What the Music Sounds Like

The symphony starts with a very famous four-note tune. It goes "short-short-short-long." You hear it twice, a little lower the second time. This small tune is called a motif.

This opening is so famous that many people have used it. Other composers have put it in their own music. It has also appeared in many places in popular culture. You can hear it in disco music, rock and roll, and in movies and television shows.

The "Victory" Tune

During World War II, the BBC radio station used this four-note tune. They played it to start their news broadcasts. This was because "short-short-short-long" sounds like the letter "V" in Morse code. The "V" stood for "Victory." It was played very quietly on a drum. People living in countries controlled by the Nazis listened secretly to the BBC news. They knew it was more likely to tell the truth.

The third movement of the symphony also uses this "short-short-short-long" rhythm. It often plays in the background.

Beethoven's Life and the Symphony

Beethoven 3
Beethoven in 1804, when he started writing the Fifth Symphony.

When Beethoven wrote this symphony, he was in his mid-thirties. He was slowly losing his hearing. This was very hard for him. He felt that as a musician, he should have perfect hearing. He became very sad about it. But he decided to keep writing down all the music he heard in his mind. He wrote about these feelings in a letter called the Heiligenstadt Testament.

The beginning of the Fifth Symphony sounds very strong and brave. The whole symphony feels like a big struggle. It starts from those first four notes. Many people have said that these notes sound like fate knocking on a door.

By the time the music reaches the last movement, it changes. It moves from a sad, minor sound to a bright, major sound. It is almost as if Beethoven has overcome his sadness and challenges.

The fourth movement of this symphony was one of the first times certain instruments were used in a symphony. These include the trombone and the piccolo.
