Sámara is a beautiful district located in the Guanacaste area of Costa Rica. It's part of the Nicoya region and is known for its lovely beaches and calm ocean waters. Many people visit Sámara for its natural beauty and fun activities.

History of Sámara

Sámara became an official district on November 26, 1971. Before that, it was part of the Nicoya District. This change helped Sámara grow and develop into the popular place it is today.

Geography of Sámara

Sámara covers an area of about 109 square kilometers (42 square miles). It's very close to sea level, only about 3 meters (10 feet) high. This low elevation means it has beautiful coastal areas.

People of Sámara

In 2011, a census counted the number of people living in Sámara. At that time, there were 3,512 inhabitants. The population has grown over the years, showing more people are choosing to live in this lovely district.

What Sámara is Known For

Tourism and Beaches

Sámara has been a popular spot for a long time, even before many international visitors arrived. Locals from nearby areas and people from the capital city of San Jose loved to spend weekends and holidays here.

The amazing beaches in Sámara and its neighbor, Carrillo, made the area a top choice for tourism development. This happened soon after the Daniel Oduber International Airport opened in Liberia.

Because Sámara is easy to reach from three of Costa Rica's four international airports, business owners helped get government funding. This money improved the roads and beach areas earlier than other places. This made it simple for visitors to enjoy the beautiful beaches and calm ocean waters. These calm waters are perfect for beginner surfers to learn and have fun!

Getting Around Sámara

Roads and Public Transport

Several important roads connect Sámara to other places:

• National Route 150
• National Route 160
• National Route 934

Sámara is about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Nicoya. Nicoya is a bigger town and an important center for business and administration in the region.

All the main roads leading to Sámara are paved, making travel easy. The last 35 kilometers of Route 150, which goes from Nicoya through Sámara to Carrillo, were paved in 2006.

You can also travel by public bus between Sámara and Nicoya. For longer trips, express buses connect Sámara directly with San Jose.

Air Travel

If you prefer to fly, Sansa Airlines offers flights to the small Carrillo Airport. This airport is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) east of Sámara, making it a quick trip to your destination.
