Séamus Begley (Irish: Séamus Ó Beaglaoich, born August 26, 1949 – died January 9, 2023) was a very famous Irish musician. He was especially known for playing the accordion and was considered one of the best traditional Irish musicians of his time.
Early Life and Music
Séamus Begley was born in a place called Baile na bPoc. This village is located on the beautiful Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. He grew up in a big family with nine children.
Music was a big part of his home life. His father, Breandán Ó Beaglaoich, was also a well-known accordion player. He even owned the local dance hall, where lots of music was played. Séamus learned to play music right there at home.
His Amazing Career
Séamus started playing at local dance events, called céilís, when he was just 13 years old. He released his first music album in 1973. It was called An Ciarraíoch Mallaithe, and he made it with his sister, Máire.
Years later, in 1989, Séamus and Máire worked together again on an album called Planxtaí Bhaile na bPoc. That same year was very exciting for Séamus. He got to play at the famous Glastonbury Festival with a musician named Steve Cooney.
Séamus and Steve Cooney then made an album together in 1992, which they called Meitheal. Séamus also played music with many other talented artists. These included Jim Murray, Mary Black, Sharon Shannon, and Tim Edey. He created many more albums throughout his career.
Later Years
Séamus Begley continued to share his wonderful music for many years. He passed away on January 9, 2023, when he was 73 years old. He left behind a great legacy of traditional Irish music.
