The Life of T. D. Bell

Early Life and Music

T. D. Bell was born in a place called Belltown, in Lee County, Texas. When he was a child, he played the banjo a little bit. However, he didn't start playing the guitar much until after a big event in history, World War II, ended. He had been in the army during the war.

After the war, Bell was greatly inspired by another famous blues guitarist named T-Bone Walker. Because he played so much like T-Bone Walker, people started calling him "Little T-Bone." He began playing in music clubs in the Rockdale area in the late 1940s. He even played alongside another musician known as Roosevelt "Grey Ghost" Williams.

Becoming a Full-Time Musician

In 1949, a club owner named Johnny Adams saw how talented T. D. Bell was. Johnny Adams convinced Bell to leave his job at an aluminum factory. Instead, Bell decided to become a full-time musician in Austin. This was a big step for him!

Bell became a very popular live performer. He often played with a talented pianist named Erbie Bowser. Bell also led his own band, called the Cadillacs. They traveled and played music all around the region. He also got to play with and support other famous musicians who visited Austin, like B. B. King, Bobby Bland, and his hero, T-Bone Walker.

Later Career and Return to Music

T. D. Bell was a very important part of the Austin music scene throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He played music for many years. Then, in the early 1970s, he decided to retire from music. He started his own business, which involved trucking.

However, in the late 1980s, Bell started performing music again! He loved playing the blues. In 1987, he formed a new band called the Blues Specialists with his old friend, pianist Erbie Bowser.

In 1992, T. D. Bell and Erbie Bowser recorded an album together called It's About Time. This album was so good that it was nominated for a special award called a W. C. Handy Award. This is a very important award in blues music. In 1994, the two friends even performed together at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City.

After Erbie Bowser passed away in 1995, T. D. Bell continued to play music. He performed at festivals and in clubs with the Blues Specialists.

His Final Years

In December 1998, T. D. Bell was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away in a hospital in Austin the next month, on January 9, 1999. He left behind a legacy of great blues music.
