What's in a Name?
The name Tabio comes from the ancient Chibcha word Teib. This word means "dent" or "hole." It describes the town's location right next to the mouth of the Río Frío river. This river is also known as Sinca.
A Look Back: Tabio's History
Before the Spanish arrived, the Muisca lived in the area where Tabio is now. They were mainly farmers. The Muisca people had two main groups of tribes. The Hunza lived in the northern part, led by a ruler called the zaque. The Bacatá lived in the southern part, led by the zipa. Tabio was part of the Bacatá territory.
Hot Springs and Ancient Beliefs
The Muisca people knew about the natural hot springs in Tabio. They believed these springs had special powers. It is said they had a temple there dedicated to the Goddess of Waters.
How Tabio Was Founded
When the Spanish took over, the Muisca people lost their land. The area came under Spanish rule. This led to the official founding of Tabio in 1603.
How Tabio Makes Money
Tabio's economy mainly relies on farming. Growing flowers, known as floriculture, is a very important part of the local economy. Farmers also grow other crops like potatoes, corn, peas, and carrots. Other types of businesses, like factories or big service industries, are not as developed here.
Fun Things to Do in Tabio
Tabio is famous for its natural hot springs. People believe these springs have healing properties. It's a great place to relax and enjoy the warm water.
The town also hosts a yearly festival. This festival celebrates the torbellino, a traditional dance from the Andean region of Colombia. It's a lively and colorful event!
