What Does the Name Subachoque Mean?

The name Subachoque comes from the ancient Chibcha language. It can mean two things: "Work of the Sun" or "Farmfields of the front."

A Look Back: Subachoque's History

Before the Spanish arrived, the Subachoque area was home to the Muisca. They were part of a group called the Muisca Confederation. The powerful zipa ruler, based in Bacatá, governed Subachoque.

Founding of Modern Subachoque

Modern Subachoque was officially founded on March 16, 1774. A priest named Jacinto Roque Salgado established the town. The Spanish Crown allowed Spanish families to settle here. The native people living in the area were moved to other parts of Colombia. Some were sadly executed if they refused to leave their homes.

Subachoque is unique because many of its residents are descendants of Spanish or European settlers. Between 1850 and the early 1900s, people from North America, Britain, France, and Germany came to Subachoque. They came because of iron production at a place called La Pradera. Their arrival left a lasting mark on the town's population.

The Battle of Campo Amalia

The Subachoque area was also the site of an important event in 1861. This was the Battle of Campo Amalia, also known as the Battle of Subachoque.
