El Rosal is a town and municipality in Colombia. It is part of the Cundinamarca region. This town is located in the Western Savanna Province. El Rosal sits on the Bogotá savanna, a high-altitude plain.
The center of El Rosal is about 2,685 meters (8,809 feet) above sea level. It is also quite close to Bogotá, Colombia's capital city. El Rosal is only about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from Bogotá. It is part of the larger Metropolitan Area of Bogotá. El Rosal shares its borders with several other towns. These include Subachoque to the northeast and San Francisco to the northwest. It also borders Madrid to the southeast and Facatativá to the southwest.
A Look Back in Time
Before 1903, the area where El Rosal is now was part of Subachoque. Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, the Muisca people lived here. The zipa (a Muisca ruler) of Bacatá (which is now Bogotá) governed Subachoque.
To the west of Subachoque lived the Panche people. When the Spanish explorers came, the Panche took advantage of the situation. They moved into the Muisca lands. In 1538, a Spanish explorer named Nicolás de Federman took control of Subachoque and El Rosal.
The Muisca people were skilled farmers. They grew many different crops. These included potatoes, maize (corn), coca, and arracacha. They also grew sweet potatoes, various tubers, and a plant called chungua (Ullucus tuberosus).
Modern El Rosal was officially started on March 28, 1903. A woman named Ana Vicenta González founded the town.
How El Rosal Makes a Living
Many people in El Rosal work in farming. A big part of the economy comes from growing flowers on a large scale. They produce beautiful roses, carnations, astromelias, and many other types of flowers.
Other important crops grown here include potatoes, carrots, and corn. Farmers also grow sweet peas, string beans, and various herbs. Wheat used to be a very important crop. However, after the 1930s, its price dropped. This made it too expensive to keep planting, so farmers stopped growing it.
Raising animals is also a key part of El Rosal's economy. There are many dairy farms that produce milk. People also raise cattle for meat. Goats and horses are important too. All these activities help the community thrive.
