Tenjo is a cool town and a municipality (which is like a local government area) in Colombia. It's located in the Cundinamarca region, specifically in the Central Savanna Province. Imagine a town nestled high up on the Bogotá savanna, about 2,587 metres (8,488 ft) above sea level – that's Tenjo!

Tenjo is close to Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It's part of the bigger area around Bogotá. This town shares its borders with other places like Chía, Madrid, Tabio, Funza, Subachoque, and Cota.

What Does Tenjo Mean?

The name Tenjo comes from the ancient Muisca language. It literally means "in the big mouth." It's interesting how names can tell us about the past!

A Look Back at Tenjo's History

Ancient Muisca People

Long, long ago, before the Spanish arrived, the area where Tenjo is now was home to the Muisca. They were an important group of people in Colombia. The Muisca in Tenjo were ruled by a leader called the zipa, who lived in a place called Bacatá. Scientists have even found ancient rock art in Tenjo, which shows us how creative and artistic the Muisca were!

Founding of Modern Tenjo

The modern town of Tenjo was officially started on April 8, 1603. A person named Diego Gómez de Mena founded it.

A few years later, on May 7, 1637, people decided to build the town's first church. Several important people hired Alonso Serrano Hernández to build it. The church was finished on August 17, 1645.

By the year 1778, Tenjo had grown quite a bit. There were 1,009 people living there in 211 families. Plus, there were 983 other native people who also called Tenjo home.

Tenjo's Economy and What It Produces

Tenjo's economy mainly focuses on two things:

  • Horticulture: This means growing plants, especially flowers and vegetables.
  • Livestock-breeding: This involves raising animals like cows, sheep, or pigs.

Because Tenjo is quite close to Bogotá, it's becoming a part of the city's surrounding areas. Many schools have also been built here, which helps the town grow and connect with the bigger city.

Tenjo's Climate

Tenjo has a mild climate, which means it's not too hot and not too cold. The temperature stays pretty steady throughout the year. It also gets a good amount of rain, especially from March to November.
