A Look Back: Cota's History
Long ago, before the Spanish arrived in Colombia, the area around Cota was home to the Muisca. They were organized into a large group called the Muisca Confederation. The powerful ruler of Bacatá, known as the zipa, was in charge of Cota.
The Muisca people called the town Gota. This name might have been a person's name, or it could have come from the word cota, which means "curl". Even today, some Muisca people still live in Cota.
Modern Cota was officially founded on November 29, 1604, by a person named Diego Gómez de Mena.
