Funza is a town and municipality in Colombia. It is part of the Cundinamarca region, located in the Western Savanna Province. Funza is found on the Bogotá savanna, which is a high plain. The town center is about 2,548 meters (8,360 feet) above sea level.

A special natural area in Funza is the La Florida wetland. This wetland is a small part of a much larger ancient lake called Lake Humboldt, which existed during the Ice Age. Funza is close to the capital city, Bogotá. It shares borders with other towns like Madrid, Tenjo, Mosquera, and Cota. The Bogotá River forms its eastern border. Funza is also important because it was once the main settlement of the Muisca Confederation, called Bacatá. The modern town of Funza was officially started by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada on April 20, 1537.

What's in a Name?

The name Funza comes from the ancient Chibcha language. In this language, "Funza" means "Powerful lord". This name shows the importance of the area in the past.

Funza's Past

Before the Spanish arrived, Funza was a very important village for the Muisca. The Muisca had a group of rulers who worked together in a loose confederation. The main ruler of the southern Muisca was called the zipa. The zipa's home base was in Bacatá, which is where Funza is today.

The modern town of Funza was founded by a Spanish explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. He started the town on April 20, 1537, while he was searching for a legendary golden city called El Dorado.

How Funza Makes a Living

The economy of Funza is a mix of farming and industry. Farmers in Funza grow important crops like potatoes and maize (corn). Besides farming, there are also factories that make things from plastics and metal.

Climate in Funza

Funza has a cool climate because it is located high up in the mountains. The temperatures are mild throughout the year, without extreme heat or cold. It often rains, especially during certain months, which helps the crops grow.
