Mosquera is a lively town in Colombia. It is located in the Cundinamarca region, specifically in the Western Savanna Province. Mosquera is very close to Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia. It is considered part of Bogotá's larger metropolitan area.
The town sits high up on the Bogotá savanna, about 2,516 metres (8,255 ft) above sea level. Mosquera shares its borders with several other places. To the east, it borders parts of Bogotá called Bosa and Fontibón. To the south, it's next to Soacha. To the north, you'll find Madrid and Funza. And to the west, it borders Bojacá.

Mosquera's Name and Founding
Mosquera got its name from a very important person: Tomás Cipriano de Mosquera. He was a former president of Colombia. In 1861, he decided to separate this area from the nearby town of Funza, officially founding Mosquera as its own municipality.
A Glimpse into Mosquera's Past
Mosquera has a long and interesting history. It is located near Lake Herrera, which is what's left of a much bigger ancient lake called Lake Humboldt. This huge lake covered the Bogotá savanna thousands of years ago. Scientists have found very old tools and other items around Lake Herrera. These findings show that people lived here even before the time known as the Herrera Period.
The Muisca People and Their Way of Life
Around 800 AD, the Muisca civilization began to thrive in this area. They were a very advanced culture, especially skilled in farming. They grew many different crops on the high plains of the savanna, including:
The Muisca were mainly farmers and traders. Their economy was largely based on getting salt from the northern parts of the Bogotá savanna. They would trade this salt, along with fruits and other farm products, at busy markets. These markets were places where people exchanged goods that grew in different climates. In Mosquera, fruits like pineapples, avocadoes, guanabanas, ice-cream beans, pitahayas, and guayabas were traded from warmer regions. Tobacco also came from more tropical areas, while cotton was traded with the colder climate Lache people.
Mosquera's Modern Growth
The area that is now Mosquera was once part of Funza. The Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada arrived in this region on April 20, 1537. Today, Mosquera has grown a lot and is a busy town connected to Bogotá.
In 2022, something very unusual happened in Mosquera. A strange type of white foam appeared and covered large parts of the town. Residents said it had a terrible smell. While many people needed inhalers because of the foam, thankfully, no serious long-term health problems were reported.
Mosquera's Climate
Mosquera has a subtropical highland climate. This means it has cool temperatures all year round. It's never too hot or too cold, making it a pleasant place to live.
