The Lache were an ancient group of people who lived in the high mountains of what is now central Colombia. They were mainly farmers, growing crops like corn, potatoes, quinoa, and cotton. The Lache spoke a language called Chibcha. They were part of a larger group of communities known as the Cocuy Confederation.
The Lache often traded goods like salt and special fabrics. They also exchanged food with other groups who spoke Chibcha. These groups included the Muisca, Guane, Pijao, and Chitarero.
A writer named Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita wrote about the Lache in the 1600s. He noted some of their unique cultural practices, including how they raised their children. Today, a neighborhood in Bogotá, Colombia's capital city, is still named Los Laches. This name helps keep the memory of the Lache people alive.
Where the Lache People Lived
The Lache people lived in the high mountain areas of eastern Santander and northern Boyacá. They also lived in a small part of northwestern Casanare. These areas are in modern-day Colombia.
