What Pacho Means

Before the Spanish arrived, the area of Pacho was known as Guataque or Gotaque. These names came from the Chibcha language. Gua meant "mountain," Tha meant "strong," and Que meant "elevated." So, Guataque meant "strong elevated mountain."

The modern name, Pacho, also comes from the Chibcha language. In Chibcha, Pa means "father" and chó means "good." This means the name Pacho can be understood as "good father."

A Look at Pacho's History

Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, the Muisca lived in the area where Pacho is now. This area was the western edge of the Muisca Confederation. This was a group of Muisca communities that worked together.

Pacho bordered other groups like the Muzo to the northwest and the Panche (also called Colima) to the west and southwest. Modern Pacho was officially started on August 25, 1604. It was founded by a person named Lorencio de Terrones.
