Oaks Stakes (1789) |
Tag was a famous British Thoroughbred racehorse born in 1786. She was a bay filly, meaning she had a reddish-brown coat with a black mane and tail. Tag only competed in three races during her career. Her biggest win was the important Oaks Stakes race at Epsom Downs.
Tag was owned by a nobleman named George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont. Her trainer, the person who prepared her for races, was Frank Neale. After her racing days, Tag became a "broodmare," which is a female horse used for breeding. She had eleven foals, continuing her family line.

Tag's Early Life
Tag was born in 1786 and was a bay filly. She was bred by her owner, the 3rd Earl of Egremont.
Tag's Parents
Tag's father was a successful racehorse named Trentham. He raced for eight years and won many important races. Tag's mother was a mare named Venus. Venus was also special because her father was the legendary horse Eclipse. Eclipse is one of the most famous racehorses in history.
Tag's Racing Career
Tag's racing career was short but memorable. She competed in only three races.
Winning the Oaks Stakes
Tag's first race was the Oaks Stakes on May 29, 1789. This big race took place at Epsom Downs. Tag was one of the favorites to win.
Out of eighteen horses entered, only seven actually started the race. Tag showed her speed and won the Oaks Stakes! She beat a horse owned by Earl Grosvenor. Two other horses, Hope and a filly by Magnet, finished third and fourth.
Other Races
The day after her big win, Tag was supposed to race against a horse named Skyscraper. However, she was withdrawn from that race.
In June 1789, Tag raced again at Ascot Heath. This time, she lost a race against a male horse (a colt) named Magpie.
Her final race was in July 1789 at Brighthelmstone. It was a special race with four parts, called heats. Tag won the first heat, but another horse named Mentor won the last two heats and took the overall victory.
Tag's Life as a Mother
After her racing career, Tag became a very important broodmare for the Earl of Egremont. She had eleven foals, which are baby horses.
Tag's Famous Offspring
Some of her foals included horses named Gulliver, Lazy, Baby, and Old Maid. One of her daughters, Lazy, became the mother of Anderida, a horse who won the famous Ascot Gold Cup.
Tag's family line continues even today. A grandson of her 1796 daughter, named St John, was sent to Australia in 1836. This means that some racehorses in Australia today might be related to Tag!
Tag's Family Tree
Tag's family tree, also known as her pedigree, shows her ancestors. This helps us understand her breeding and why she was such a good racehorse.
