Tag's Early Life and Family
Tag was a beautiful bay filly, which means she was a young female horse with a reddish-brown body and black mane and tail. She was born in 1786. Her breeder and owner was the Earl of Egremont.
Tag's father was a successful racehorse named Trentham. He raced for eight years and won many races. Her mother was a mare named Venus. Venus was also special because her father was the famous horse Eclipse. Eclipse was known for being very fast and strong. Venus also had famous brothers named Jupiter, Mercury, and Volunteer.
Tag's Racing Adventures
Tag only raced three times in her life. Her first race was a very big one!
Winning the Oaks Stakes
On May 29, 1789, Tag raced in the Oaks Stakes at Epsom Downs. This was a major race for young female horses. Tag was one of the favorites to win.
Even though eighteen fillies were first entered, only seven actually started the race. Tag raced against some tough competitors. She won the race, beating a filly owned by Earl Grosvenor. Another horse named Hope finished third. This was a huge win for Tag!
Other Races
The day after her big win, Tag was supposed to race against a horse named Skyscraper, but she did not compete.
In June, Tag raced again at Ascot Heath. This time, she lost a race against a male horse (a colt) named Magpie.
Her last race was in July 1789 at Brighthelmstone (now Brighton). It was a £50 race with four parts, called heats. Tag was the favorite among the four horses. She won the first heat, but another horse named Mentor won the last two heats and took the overall win.
Tag's Life as a Mother
After her short racing career, Tag became a broodmare for the Earl of Egremont. This means she was used to have foals and help create new generations of racehorses.
Tag was a very good mother and had eleven foals! Some of her foals were named Tag, Gulliver, Lazy, Baby, and Old Maid. Her daughter Lazy later had a foal named Anderida, who won the important Ascot Gold Cup race.
Tag's family line continues even today! One of her grandsons, named St John, was sent all the way to Australia in 1836. This shows how important Tag was to the world of horse racing.
