Taghadoe is an old monastic site in County Kildare, Ireland. It features the remains of a round tower and a graveyard. You can find it about 5 kilometers from Maynooth, near the Straffan Road.

The name Taghadoe comes from the Irish words Teach Tua. This means 'House of Tua'. Saint Tua, also known as Ultan the Silent, was an abbot from Clonmacnoise. He was the one who started this monastic settlement.

History of Taghadoe

The Taghadoe site dates back a very long time. It was first established in the 6th century. The round tower was used for about 1000 years. By the 17th century, it was already in ruins.

The Graveyard

The graveyard at Taghadoe was mainly used in the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the people buried here were Roman Catholics. It shows how important the site was to the local community.

The Church Building

A church was built at Taghadoe in 1831. It was for the Church of Ireland. A man named John Dillon had left money for a church to be built. The Duke of Leinster helped make sure his wishes were carried out. The church also received a donation of £830 from the Board of First Fruits.

This church was only active for about 40 years. Even though it is now abandoned, its walls are still quite strong.

A National Monument

The old round tower at Taghadoe was officially declared a National Monument in 1886. This means it is a very important historical site. The Office of Public Works (OPW) now takes care of the site. They help protect it for everyone to visit and learn from.
