The Tagish Highland is a special hilly area. It is located in the far northwest of British Columbia and into the Yukon territory in Canada. This area is found on the inland side of the northern Boundary Ranges. These ranges are part of the larger Coast Mountains. The Tagish Highland stretches from Atlin Lake to a place called Champagne in the Yukon.
What is the Tagish Highland Like?
Even though it's near very tall mountains, the Tagish Highland isn't as high or covered in as much ice. But it is still a very rugged place. This means it has lots of rough terrain. There are big changes in how high or low the land is. Imagine deep valleys next to steep hills – that's what "extreme variations in relief" means.
Some people think of the Tagish Highland as part of the Boundary Ranges. These are a section of the Coast Mountains. Others, like in the Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia, see it as part of the "Interior Mountains."
Why is the Tagish Highland Important?
The Tagish Highland is famous for its history. It was a very important area during the Klondike Gold Rush. This was a time when many people traveled to find gold.
The highland has a network of valleys. These valleys led from the Chilkoot Pass and White Pass. These passes were mountain routes from the ports of Skagway and Haines, Alaska. From there, prospectors, or gold seekers, traveled to the headwaters of the Yukon River. They then floated downstream to the legendary goldfields of the Klondike.
What are its Sub-ranges?
The Tagish Highland includes several smaller mountain ranges. These are:
- Bennett Range
- Sloko Range
- White Range
