Tahoe City is a small town in Placer County, California. It sits right on the edge of Lake Tahoe, where the Truckee River begins its journey.

This area was first explored in 1863. A building called Tahoe House was put up in 1864. The town's post office opened in 1871. Later, in 1949, the town officially changed its name to Tahoe City. Its ZIP Code is 96145.

Weather in Tahoe City

Tahoe City is high up in the mountains, so it has a special kind of weather. It's called a dry-summer humid continental climate. This means summers are dry with warm days and cool nights. Winters are cold and get a lot of snow.

Snowfall and Winter Weather

Tahoe City gets a lot of snow, about 170 inches (4.3 meters) each year! Even though it snows a lot, the temperature often goes above freezing during the day. This causes the snow to melt and refreeze. The deepest snow ever recorded on the ground was 166 inches (4.2 meters) in March 1952. Snow usually melts by April, but sometimes it can last into May after a very snowy winter.

It doesn't often get super cold. On average, the temperature drops to 0°F (–18°C) or lower only about one or two nights a year. However, it freezes (drops below 32°F or 0°C) on over 200 nights each year. The coldest temperature ever recorded was –16°F (–27°C) in December 1972.

Summer Weather

Summers in Tahoe City are usually dry and sunny. Days are very warm. Even though it's summer, nights can be chilly. Sometimes, the temperature has even dropped below freezing in July and August! The hottest temperature ever recorded was 94°F (34°C) in August 1933.
