The Taifa of Albarracín (Arabic: طائفة بني رزين) was a small Muslim kingdom in medieval Spain. It was led by the Banu Razin, a Berber tribe from North Africa. This kingdom existed from 1012 to 1104. Its main city was Albarracín. The Banu Razin tribe came to Spain after Tariq ibn Ziyad led the Muslim conquest.
How the Kingdom Ended
By 1167, the Taifa of Albarracín faced many wars. These were between the Almoravids and the new Almohad Caliphate. The Muslim King Muhammad ibn Mardanis decided to give the Taifa of Albarracín away. He gave it to Pero Ruíz d'Azagra, a noble from Estella-Lizarra. Pero Ruíz d'Azagra was a vassal (a loyal supporter) of Sancho VI of Navarre. He received this land for helping the Navarrese king. This help was against Alfonso VIII of Castile and Alfonso I of Aragón.
In 1172, Pero Ruíz d'Azagra made his control stronger. He made the territory, called the Señorío, independent. It was separate from other Christian kingdoms nearby. In 1190, an important agreement was signed. It was called the Borja Accords. Alfonso II of Aragon and Sancho VI of Navarre signed it. They agreed to help each other if Alfonso VIII of Castile attacked. This agreement officially recognized the Sinyoría d'Albarrazín.
