Albarracín is a beautiful Spanish town. It is located in the province of Teruel. This province is part of the region of Aragon.

Albarracín is surrounded by rocky hills. The town was named a Monumento Nacional (National Monument) in 1961. Many red sandstone rocks and cliffs are around Albarracín. This makes it a great place for rock climbing, especially for boulderers.

History of Albarracín

Early History and Name

The town gets its name from the Hawwara Berber family, the Banu Razin. This family ruled Albarracín from the early 11th century. It was their main city until 1104. That year, the Almoravids took control.

An Independent Lordship

From 1167 to 1300, Albarracín was an independent area. It was called the Sinyoría d'Albarrazín (Lordship of Albarracín). This lordship was created after the Taifa of Albarracín was divided. Pedro Ruiz de Azagra was in charge.

In 1284, Peter III of Aragon conquered Albarracín. The ruling family, the House of Azagra, lost their power. Juan Núñez I de Lara was the last person to officially hold the title of Lord of Albarracín. His son, Juan Núñez II de Lara, tried to claim the title. But in 1300, the city and its lands officially became part of the Kingdom of Aragon.

Jewish Community in the Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, a Jewish community lived in Albarracín. Records show that Jewish people were there even before the 12th century. This community faced difficulties over time. In 1492, many Jewish people were asked to leave Spain. This event is known as the expulsion of the Jews.

Geography of Albarracín

The town is located in a bend of the Guadalaviar River. This bend is called a meander. The Sierra de Albarracín mountain range is to the south and west of the town.
