The Taifa of Baeza was a small Moorish kingdom in medieval Spain. It was called a "taifa" because it was one of many small Muslim states that appeared after a larger empire broke apart. This kingdom existed for a very short time, only from 1224 to 1226. It was then taken over by the Christian Kingdom of Castile.
What Was a Taifa?
A taifa was an independent Muslim kingdom. These kingdoms formed in the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain and Portugal). They appeared after the powerful Caliphate of Córdoba fell apart in the 11th century. Many small taifas competed with each other.
The Taifa of Baeza was one of the last taifas to form. It appeared during a time when Christian kingdoms were growing stronger. These Christian kingdoms were slowly taking back land from Muslim rule. This period is known as the Reconquista.
Rulers of Baeza
The ruler of a taifa was called an Emir. An Emir was like a king or a prince. The Taifa of Baeza had only one known ruler. He belonged to the Bayasid family.
Bayasid Dynasty
- Abd Allah al-Bayasi "El Baezano": He ruled from 1224 to 1226. He was the only Emir of this short-lived kingdom.
Abd Allah al-Bayasi tried to keep his kingdom safe. However, the Christian forces were very strong. The Kingdom of Castile was a powerful neighbor. It eventually conquered Baeza, ending the taifa's independence.
Baeza Today
The city of Baeza is now in modern-day Spain. It is a beautiful city with a rich history. Many buildings from its past still stand. These include structures from its time as a Moorish city. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
