The Taifa of Silves was a small Arab kingdom that existed in what is now southern Portugal. A "taifa" (pronounced TIE-fah) was a small, independent Muslim state. These states appeared in Spain and Portugal after the big Caliphate of Córdoba broke apart.
The Taifa of Silves existed in two separate periods. The first was from 1027 to 1063. The second was from 1145 to 1150. It was finally taken over by a powerful group called the Almohad Caliphate.
The kingdom was located in the western part of the Algarve region in Portugal. Its capital city was Silves.

The First Kingdom of Silves
The first Taifa of Silves started in 1027. It was a small but important kingdom.
Rulers from the Banu Muzayn Family
From 1048, a family called the Banu Muzayn ruled Silves. They had three important leaders, known as emirs:
- Isa II al-Muzaffar (ruled 1048–1053)
- Muhammad II al-Nasir (ruled 1053–1058)
- Isa III al-Muzaffar (ruled 1058–1063)
Under Isa III, the kingdom faced a big challenge. A stronger taifa, the Taifa of Seville, conquered Silves in 1063. Silves then became part of Seville's kingdom.
Under Other Powers
After being conquered by Seville, Silves remained under their control until 1091. Then, another powerful group, the Almoravid dynasty, took over the region. Silves was part of the Almoravid empire until 1145.
The Second Kingdom of Silves
The Almoravid dynasty eventually grew weaker and fell apart. This led to a period called the "second taifa period." During this time, many small kingdoms appeared again.
Silves became an independent taifa once more in 1145. This second kingdom was very short-lived. Its only ruler was Abu'l-Walid Muhammad, from the al-Mundirid dynasty.
Conquest by the Almohads
The second Taifa of Silves lasted only five years. In 1150, it was conquered by the Almohad Caliphate. The Almohads were a new, powerful empire that took control of much of Spain and Portugal. This marked the final end of the Taifa of Silves as an independent kingdom.
