The Taifa of Tejada (Arabic: طائفة تيجادا) was a small Islamic kingdom in medieval Spain. It was called a "taifa" (which means "party" or "faction" in Arabic). This kingdom existed for a very short time, from 1146 to 1150. It was then taken over by a larger empire called the Almohad Caliphate.
The Taifa of Tejada was centered around the town of Tejada. This town is located in what is now the Province of Burgos in northern Spain.
What Was the Taifa of Tejada?
A taifa was a small, independent Muslim kingdom. These kingdoms appeared in Spain after the main Muslim empire there, the Caliphate of Córdoba, broke apart. The Taifa of Tejada was one of these many small states. It was ruled by a family from an Arab tribe known as the Banu Khazraj.
Who Ruled Tejada?
The rulers of the Taifa of Tejada belonged to the Khazraj dynasty. They believed they were descendants of Anas ibn Malik. He was a sahaba, which means a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
The only known ruler of the Taifa of Tejada was:
- Yusuf al-Khazraji: He ruled from 1146 to 1150. He had also been a ruler in Niebla before this.
How Did the Taifa End?
The Taifa of Tejada was very short-lived. It only lasted for four years. In 1150, it was conquered by the Almohad Caliphate. The Almohads were a powerful Muslim empire that came from North Africa. They took control of many taifa kingdoms in Spain during this time.
