Takeo Wakabayashi (若林 竹雄, Wakabayashi Takeo, 29 August 1907 – 7 August 1937) was a talented Japanese football player. He was known for playing as a forward. Wakabayashi proudly represented the Japan national team during his career.

Early Life and Club Career

Takeo Wakabayashi was born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, on August 29, 1907. He loved playing football from a young age.

He played for a local team called Kobe Icchu Club. This club was special because it was made up of players from his high school, Kobe Daiichi High School, and its graduates.

With Kobe Icchu Club, Wakabayashi achieved a big win. He helped his team win the 1927 Emperor's Cup. This was a major football tournament in Japan at the time.

Playing for Japan

Wakabayashi's skills on the field led him to the national team. In May 1930, while he was a student at Tokyo Imperial University, he was chosen to play for the Japan national team.

He joined the team for the Football at the 1930 Far Eastern Championship Games. This important competition took place in Tokyo. Japan performed very well and won the championship!

Debut and Hat-trick

Wakabayashi made his first appearance for Japan on May 25, 1930. In this exciting match against the Philippines, he scored an amazing four goals!

He was the very first player for the Japan national team to score a hat-trick (three goals in one game) in his first match. This incredible achievement was not repeated for 80 years!

A few days later, on May 29, he also played against the Republic of China. In total, he played 2 games for Japan in 1930 and scored 4 goals.

Later Life

Sadly, Takeo Wakabayashi passed away young. He died on August 7, 1937, in Hyogo Prefecture, at the age of 29. He died from a lung disease.
