Takis Fyssas (Greek: Τάκης Φύσσας) was born on June 12, 1973. He is a Greek former professional footballer. He played as a left back defender. After he stopped playing, he became the sporting director for the Greek national team.

From 1999 to 2007, Takis Fyssas played 60 games for the Greek national team. He was a key player in the team that won the Euro 2004 championship. This was a huge surprise in the football world!

Takis Fyssas's Club Journey

Starting at Panionios

Takis Fyssas began his football journey in the youth academy of Panionios. He made his first professional appearance in the 1990–91 season. He played for eight seasons at Panionios. During this time, his team won the Greek Cup.

Moving to Panathinaikos

In 1998, Fyssas joined Panathinaikos, a big club in Athens. Playing for Panathinaikos helped him get noticed. He quickly joined the Greek national side. His first game for Greece was against Finland in 1999. Fyssas also played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time with Panathinaikos. This was during the 2000–01 season.

Playing in Portugal with Benfica

In December 2003, Takis Fyssas moved to Lisbon, Portugal. He joined Benfica, another famous football club. He stayed there for a season and a half. With Benfica, he helped them win the Portuguese Cup in 2004. They also won the Primeira Liga (the top league in Portugal) in 2005. He even scored a goal in the Portuguese Cup final that helped Benfica win!

Time in Scotland with Hearts

After leaving Benfica in 2005, Fyssas made a surprising move. He decided to play for Hearts in Scotland. Many other clubs from England and Germany were interested in him. In his first season with Hearts, he won his fourth career medal. Hearts defeated Gretna in the Scottish Cup final. He scored his only goal for Hearts in a league game in December 2006. Fans loved him for his exciting celebrations. He left the club in 2007 to return to Panathinaikos.

Back to Panathinaikos and Retirement

For his second time at Panathinaikos, Fyssas played only a few games. After this, he quietly decided to retire from playing football.

International Career Highlights

Takis Fyssas played 60 matches for the Greek national team. He scored four goals for his country. He was one of the most important players when Greece won the Euro 2004 championship. This tournament took place in Portugal. Before it started, many people thought Greece had no chance of winning. Their victory shocked the entire football world! Because of his great performance, Fyssas was chosen for the "Team of the Tournament."

Life After Playing Football

After retiring as a player, Takis Fyssas continued to work in football. He joined the staff of the Panathinaikos Youth Departments. There, he worked as a technical director. Later, he was hired by the Greek national team. He helped coach Otto Rehhagel for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also worked with the new coach, Fernando Santos, after Rehhagel retired in 2010. Fyssas also served as the sporting director for the Greek national team until 2024.

In May 2019, Fyssas was a candidate in the Greek legislative election. He was nominated by the New Democracy Party. However, he was not elected.
