Tala is a city located in the northern part of the Canelones Department in southern Uruguay. It is also the name of the local government area, called a municipality, that the city belongs to.

Geography of Tala
Where is Tala Located?
Tala is found where two main roads, Route 7 and Route 12, cross paths. It is about 25 kilometers north of San Jacinto. Tala is also about 20 kilometers east of San Ramón. To the south, it is about 18 kilometers from Fray Marcos in the Florida Department.
History of Tala
Tala started as a small settlement. It was officially recognized as a "Pueblo" (which means village) on May 2, 1860. Over time, it grew bigger.
Tala's Growth: From Village to City
- On May 15, 1925, Tala's status was upgraded to "Villa" (which means town). This change was made by a special law, Ley Nº 7.837.
- Later, on April 28, 1960, Tala grew even more. Its status was raised again to "Ciudad" (which means city). This happened through another law, Ley Nº 12.708.
Population in Tala
According to a count done in 2011, Tala had a population of 5,089 people. In 2010, the local government, called the Intendencia de Canelones, estimated that the entire municipality of Tala had about 9,499 residents during elections.
