A Look Back in Time
Early Days of Tallaboa
Long before Europeans arrived, Tallaboa was an important village. It was led by respected leaders called caciques. These leaders were very important to the people living there.
Becoming Part of the United States
Later, in the late 1800s, a war happened between Spain and the United States. This was called the Spanish–American War. After the war, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a part of the U.S. but does not have all the same rights as a state.
